The Very Hungry Caterpillar 1st Birthday

I can’t believe I’m writing about my son’s first birthday!  How can it be that a whole year has gone by since we were blessed with this sweet little boy?  Nonetheless, we did celebrate Jonathan turning one a little early.  He happened to be born right in the middle of spring break, so we have a lot of family and friends that would have missed his party if we had done it the weekend before or after his birthday.  We, of course, wanted everyone to be there to help us celebrate our little guy’s life!

Ever since, well, I’ll be honest, I found out I was having a little boy, I started planning his first birthday.  (Pinterest helps me plan WAY too much!)  I had gone between having a lumberjack and The Very Hungry Caterpillar theme for a while.  Obviously, I decided on The Very Hungry Caterpillar.  Who can resist the bright colors and fun little plot of Eric Carle’s infamous book?!

We kept our party pretty simple, but I love how everything turned out!  We had it in our church’s gym.  With it being March in Oklahoma, you never know what kind of weather you are going to have, so that nixed my initial thought of having his party at a park.  It ended up being pretty chilly that day, so I was thankful for our church allowing us to use the gym.  The kids were able to run around, play basketball, and just enjoy the open space and freedom.

This ended up being our setup for the food, drinks, and Jonathan’s high chair.  I love the way it turned out!  The colors in this book make for an adorable birthday party theme, I think!  I was able to find a free download for food labels on Pinterest.  I cut these out, glued them to different color Astrobright paper, and stuck them to toothpicks.  I didn’t do all the food in The Very Hungry Caterpillar, but I did have a meat, cheese, and cracker platter, as well as some strawberries, oranges, and apple slices.

I got most of my caterpillar themed products from Oriental Trading, but you can get some of the same products on Amazon as well.  Our cake came from Abeytacakes.  She did a FANTASTIC job!  We had multiple people tell us the cake was so good, and wanted to know where we got it!  (It did get a crack in the icing though…)

For Jonathan’s high chair garland, diaper cover, bow tie, and little onesie, I ended up making all of it.  I had looked around on Etsy, thinking I would save time by buying all of it, but I just couldn’t get myself to fork out that kind of money!  I bought fabric a lot like this one, as well as some fat quarters from Wal-Mart, and ended up making my own!  I will be posting more information about his diaper cover, bow tie, and garland later on, but I won’t lie, I thought they turned out pretty good considering I’m far from being a great sewer!  🙂

The day ended up being a great one!  We were able to celebrate our little guy’s birthday with family and friends whom we are truly blessed with.  I know Jonathan will never remember any of his party, but I know he enjoyed the time with everyone!
