A Quick, Effective Cleaning Routine

Hello!

Can you say busy time of year?!  I swear, I thought this August would be a little slower since I’m not in the classroom now, but I think it has been just as hectic for me!  I’ve picked up a few side gigs that have kept my hands full and I have just not had the energy to pull out my laptop to write!

Now, when I first got married and was teaching, my house would always get cleaned over the weekend.  I would make sure I seemingly had my life together before the start of another week:  clean house, laundry done, meals prepped, etc.  Last year though, with a baby in the picture, I never seemed to have enough time during the weekend to get all of this done.  In comes my cleaning schedule!

With this schedule, I bite off a little bit of cleaning and laundry each day.  This way, I never feel completely bombarded by how disastrous my house has gotten, or the massive pile of laundry that has slowly accrued.  Because let’s be honest, when you are living with a baby/toddler, your house is never completely clean.  *sigh*

Now, some days, this just doesn’t happen.  There are no ifs, ands, or buts to it.  Sometimes, we have friends or family over for the day, we are out of town, or maybe, I’m just not feeling up to being productive.  I try my hardest though.  For me, a clean house is parallel with sanity.  So, here is how I get things done…

Monday– Bedrooms

  • Wash sheets
  • Dust furniture
  • vacuum floors

Tuesday– Bathrooms and Utility Room

  • clean bathtub, sinks, and toilets
  • empty trashcans
  • sweep and mop floors
  • wipe down washer and dryer
  • wash towels

Wednesday– Kitchen

  • wipe down all counter surfaces, microwave, and stove top
  • sweep and mop floors
  • wash white load
  • Clean out and wipe down refrigerator (only done at the beginning of each month)

Thursday– Living Room

  • Dust furniture
  • vacuum floor
  • clean front door glass
  • wash dark loads

Friday– Toy Room/Office

  • Dust furniture
  • vacuum floor
  • wash bright/color load
  • wash Jonathan’s laundry

Now, this is not to say that I don’t wipe down my kitchen counters throughout the week!  On Wednesdays though, I try to do a really good job of it versus a quick clean to get the obvious crud off.  I also tend to do a quick vacuum over the weekend throughout the house simply because we play really hard in the backyard and typically drag in a lot of grass clippings, dirt, and who knows what else!  Basically, if you have a house with a toddler like myself, you may still need to do some minor maintenance in each room throughout the week, but this will help with the major deep cleaning.

For those of you busy women out there, I hope this helps you get a mental hold on an easy way to break down the cleaning list to small bites.  Trust me when I say, this has saved me some major sanity!
